Relate York & Harrogate Childrens and Young People's Services Enabling young people to thrive.
Counselling
One-to-One Counselling
At the heart of Relate’s Children and Young People’s services is the provision of FREE one-to-one support for children and young people who have been affected by issues that arise within their family or at school. These can include the breakdown of their parent’s or carer’s relationship, bereavement, and the formation of new (blended) families or the absence of a family member from their life.
Family Counselling
Relate provides family counselling services. The work that counsellors carry out with children and young people is very effective, however if the whole family can be worked with, this work can have even more profound and lasting effects.
Positive impact

Relate makes a difference to children and young people’s lives
The opportunity to talk with a trusted, professional counsellor has a positive impact on many areas of children and young people’s lives. It can help increase their self-esteem and confidence, enable them to communicate better with their peers, teachers and families and increase their ability to focus and engage in learning. This ensures that they are better equipped to achieve, enjoy life, make a positive contribution and in the longer term achieve economic well being.
Time and again, our young clients tell us that one of the most valuable aspects of Relate counselling, is the fact that they can talk confidentially to someone ‘outside’ their situation, who is neither a parent, teacher or peer, and who they can really confide in.
Training
Peer Mentoring Training
We can provide a range of training programmes for young people including Relationship Education and Peer Mentoring training. The training can be delivered as a bespoke package which is tailored to the school’s requirements. This may involve training pupils to become peer mentors alongside members of staff at the school, or it can include a comprehensive package of training and ongoing support in the form of regular supervision groups.

Child protection and safeguarding
Relate treats child protection and the safeguarding of children with the utmost priority. Relate has been working closely with the NSPCC to ensure that our policy and procedures are robust and relevant to our work.
Relate practitioners explain to all the children and young people that we work with that while we will treat everything they tell us in confidence, we may have to break this confidence if they disclose any information that gives us concern for their safety or anyone else's.
Relate recognises that some of our young clients may be affected by issues such as Domestic Violence and Abuse (DVA), as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse or neglect. Relate makes sure that all practitioners are able to sensitively approach such cases and are supported to deal with cases appropriately.
